A Note from Fr. Joel
Today we celebrate the outward manifestation of the receiving of the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised to his disciples and that in word he gave them when he breathed on them when he appeared to them after his resurrection in that same room where these frightened disciples gathered together.
From Frightened Disciples when this event of the Pentecost happened they were all filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and so being transformed to Courageous Apostles.
We are proud of our confirmands this year who will be confirmed this afternoon by our beloved Bishop David Ricken at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay. You may all continue your life- journey with confidence in the Holy Spirit’s presence in your lives.
The Holy Spirit is the source of the apostles’ great ability to be strong witnesses of the Holy Trinity. For 50 days the Resurrected Jesus continued to prepare the disciples reminding them of his teachings and promises. It means that even after the resurrection event the disciples missed to get the point who Jesus really is and his mission because they were focused on their own earthly aspirations and dreams. We ourselves are of the same boat with the first disciples. So, let us continue to desire, to cling closer and to know deeper the Lord and his teachings and open our heart and mind to the presence of the Holy Spirit given us in the sacraments we received.
In the Gospel Jesus told his disciples: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always.” In conjunction to Jesus’ sentiment, I may say: “If you love me, you will keep me in your prayers while I am out there doing mission appeal for our religious community and send you one of my brother Filipino priests, Fr. Loretto “Tom” Sotto, II, mf. He is our priest this weekend to serve you with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. Please be kind to him much more than you do to me. Thank you very much and Happy Pentecost Sunday everyone!
Co-Traveler, Fr. Joel, mf
The Mass – A slice at a time
The Eucharistic Prayer
The main elements of which the Eucharistic Prayer consists may be distinguished from one another in this way: a) The Thanksgiving, expressed especially in the Preface, in which the priest, in the name of the whole of the holy people, glorifies God the Father and gives thanks to him for the whole work of salvation or for some particular aspect of it, according to the varying day, festivity, or time of year
Pentecost Sunday
Happy birthday to the Catholic Church! Happy birthday to you, who are the body of the Church! We're all familiar with our own birthdays, and we celebrate them because they mark the day of the year in which we entered into this life. But did you know you have a second birthday?
Because you are part of the body of the Church, Pentecost is the Church's birthday, and yours as well. And like any birthday, it's a cause for celebration.
The word Pentecost is Greek and it means "50th day." Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers, and the beginning of their Earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations.
Pentecost is also a Jewish holiday, which the Jews use to celebrate the end of Passover. Jews celebrate the gift of the law to Moses at Mt. Sinai on this day. But we, as Catholics celebrate the birth of our Church.
At Pentecost, the Apostles and their followers were gathered in a room. Jews from all over the world were gathered with Peter, the leader of the Apostles and the Eleven. At this time, a great wind blew and a flame appeared as a tongue of fire, which split itself into many individual flames above the heads of all those present. The Holy Spirit came upon these people and each began to speak in tongues. Despite the fact many had no common language, they were perfectly able to understand one another
Let us remember in prayer Laurie Barnes who has been called by God to eternal life. We also remember her family and friends, and pray that God will give them consolation and peace
