A Note From Your Deacon:
The theme for this 3rd Sunday of Easter is “Encounter,” based on the familiar “Road to Emmaus” gospel reading from Luke. The sad and downcast disciples, walking on the road to Emmaus, experienced an encounter with the Risen Christ. Through their walking and talking with Jesus, they became refreshed and their hearts, once full of sorrow and sadness, become alive and burning with fire. A true encounter with our Lord does not leave us unchanged. Darkness and despair cannot put out the Light and Life of Christ. In Jesus’ encounter with the disciples, their hearts once again become full of hope. Hope is a precious gift and it is hope that helps a person not quit on life or despair in a very difficult situation. What does hope look like? Emily Dickenson, an American poet, describes it as a bird that perches in the soul and never stops singing at all. I would say that hope is found at mercy’s ground- and with the soil of faith, cannot help but grow. May our hearts have renewed hope this Easter season as we encounter the Risen Savior on the dusty roads we travel!
Upon Further Reflection:
After a church service on Sunday morning, a young boy suddenly announced to his mother, “Mom, I’ve decide to become a priest when I grow up.”
“That’s OK with us,” she said, “but what made you decide that?”
“Well,” said the little boy, “I have to go to church on Sunday anyway, and I figure it will be more fun to stand up and yell than to sit down and listen.”
