We are a Christian community called together to grow in faith and to celebrate God’s love for us in the Mass and Sacraments of the Catholic Church.  Through the gospel message and our common worship we are challenged to give Christian witness by our lives and service to others.

Here are more helpful practical reminders (Mass Etiquette: dos and don’ts while at Mass) that we may not take for granted so that our worship (Eucharistic celebration) will be fully alive and will be given much deserved reverence it needs:

1. Come early… simply do some effort to come 10-15 minutes before Mass time; by doing this we can have some time to pray and begin the Mass in the right spirit.

2. No Phones… if we cannot turn-off our phones, at least we can put it in silent mode. For emergency reasons we can just quietly leave the Church to answer phone calls. (You may see me take out my cell phone during Mass, not because I am doing Facebook, chatting or texting, but I have the blessings in it which I confer at the end of the Mass).

3. I think we are conscious of our modesty in coming to Mass. the Eucharist is a special celebration, let us put on the best you have.

4. Do not forget upon entering the Church to bow or genuflect as a sign of devotion and reverence to the house of God, (remember that Jesus is present in the Tabernacle, as a sign of respect to the Lord’s residence)

5. Be an active participant when attending Mass. We should not feel bored as we routinely do things during Mass; like, standing, sitting, responding etc., because this is what it means by active participation. We should join in the singing of hymns, praying, responding a bit louder or listening attentively.

6. Avoid talking to persons beside you while the Mass is going on, surely because we may disturb other people.

7. Eating during Mass is very impolite, the Church is not a resto, it is the house of prayer. Even with your children, we should teach them why we not ‘eat’ at Mass, after Church then we can eat.

8. Don’t be in a hurry going out from Church… the Mass officially ends when the priest leaves the altar, we can even still spend some moments in our pews for silent prayer after the Mass. I once reminded that the Mass is not done yet right after Communion, so please if we can stay until the final blessing instead of leaving right away after receiving Communion.

9. If we are sick, do not force yourselves coming to Mass especially if you really can’t make it, as long as we always have our desire to be in the Eucharistic celebration.

10. Greeting almost all of you after Mass is a very healthy spiritual expression, (we don’t do it in the Philippines) I really appreciate your compliments, or even the usual ‘have a good day father’, which I will also give you my extended blessings… it makes our bond as children of God stronger… it is always a great push on my part not to stop attending to your spiritual needs, especially celebrating the Mass with you. Thank you!
